Always keen on haute, dramatic design – particularly in architecture – I’ve been scouring the wiki-pages lately, learning of the fabulous and outrageous wealth of The Gilded Age. From the Astor’s to the Rockefeller’s, the families that ruled modern industry in a time of our country’s most pronounced economic and industrial growth, amassed some of the most magnificent and massive homes in the world. With fortunes built from railroads, coal and oil, these famous families ensured their names would live on in history through generous philanthropy, but more commonly, their grand estates.

Below are just a few of the most prominent and well-preserved homes from California to Rhode Island, and my favorite, the Biltmore Estate in Asheville, North Carolina. Enjoy!
